The Spark Behind The Dimensional Divide

Sometimes, a story idea begins as nothing more than a stray thought—rough, unrefined, and even riddled with bad grammar. Here’s the original note that sparked what eventually grew into The Dimensional Divide. It’s a glimpse into my creative process and how a seemingly simple idea can evolve into something grand.

This was the note I jotted down to myself:

Let’s talk about ghosts.

Although most people don’t believe in them, sightings are becoming increasingly frequent—so much so that the U.S. Government has invested billions of dollars in a global research project. The project aims to disprove the existence of specters and spooks and to find a cure for the epidemic hysteria enveloping our country and most of Europe.

There’s a theory that something in the mesosphere creates a static charge leaking into the stratosphere and then into the troposphere, slowly tearing the spectral fabric that keeps souls in the spiritual plane. This tear allows spirits to come and go as they please into the physical plane.

This is just one hypothesis, though the most popular. Others include:

  1. The Parinirvana Plane Theory – Some Asian scientists believe Buddha is freeing his enslaved souls by sending them back to Earth.
  2. The Core Disruption Theory – Another proposes that the disruption comes from the Earth’s core.

However, none of these are correct. A small private laboratory has proven there are no ghosts. What people are seeing are living, breathing beings—not from another world, but from a parallel dimension. The “apparitions” are glimpses through weak points in the fabric separating dimensions.

The cause of these breaches is still a mystery. And then there’s the question: What do we do with the two people the lab accidentally pulled through? One is a cop; the other, a killer on the run. The bigger question? How do we repair the breaches before both dimensions collapse into one?

I wasn’t thrilled with the idea at first, but I decided to build on it. Here’s what I came up with:

A CIA contractor, specializing in finding missing persons, is brought into the project. The two people pulled through are a detective from the parallel dimension and a serial killer she was pursuing. The killer, using advanced technology from his world, kills a lab technician upon arrival and escapes.

Now, the detective and the ex-CIA contractor must join forces to stop the killer, while scientists work to uncover the cause of the breaches and repair the dimensional fabric. Along the way, the team develops a portable device to open and close dimensional breaches.

But the stakes rise when the killer steals the device. What follows is a high-stakes chase across two dimensions, full of danger, betrayal, and revelations about the fabric of existence itself.

Sometimes, even the roughest spark can ignite something truly adventurous. This idea evolved into a sprawling narrative full of mystery, action, and the intricate relationships between worlds. I hope it inspires others to embrace the messy beginnings of creativity.
